Why Malaysian Studies?!

Well I`m not blaming.I just don`t understand how the MQA board designed the course content for Malaysian Studies.MQA is a department which monitors the quality of private universities in Malaysia,in order to satisfied them most of us are FORCED to study those LAME subjects. Our MQA units are Moral Studies and Malaysian Studies. If we didn`t do well in our SPM exam we are required to take Bahasa Kebangsaan (which is so called Malay Language)as well.

I need to complete my Moral Studies and Malaysian Studies before I graduate.OK I accept this facts and was decided to show some enthusiasm in learning these subjects but I found that I just can`t!It`s because the course content is so BORING and LAME! For me Moral Studies still OK since we focus on the philosophies. It`s better as compared with our secondary school`s Moral.I can remember those days while we all were suffering as we have to memorize all the Moral Values! However,my life (or most of us) was also not easy since I have to deal with the philosophies and all the major world religions! But luckily I passed my Moral exam so I can ignore this subject FOREVER!

And now I come to my 1st year 2nd semester.Inthis term we have to study Malaysian Studies together with the Pharmacy and Engineering students.I was actually quite interested in this subject because as I read the introduction of Malaysian Studies I saw this "Objective : To help students understand the political, social and economic development in Malaysia from pre-historic times until the present" .As I always remind myself to equip myself with current issues I thought this unit will be a interesting one.But sadly to tell that I`m actually very very disappointed to this subject.

The course content of Malaysian Studies is same like what we studied during our secondary school times.I have to emphasize that, our content in History textbook for secondary school is actually repeating. For example the chapter about pre historic times. The difference between Malaysian Studies and History during school times is----Malaysian Studies is taught in English while History is taught in Malay. Those chapters like Malaysian Union,Federation 1948,British colonies in Malaysia,Portuguese in Malacca,Malacca Kingdom...these are all the things which are too BORING for me since these are just repeating thing. Why can`t they design they design the course which focuses on current issues and developments?More recent issues please!Don`t just keep on remind us on how our country is formed and bla bla bla TT

Perhaps most of our students only know to get their knowledge from the subjects which got EXAM!Thus our officers has no way to improve this situation but to do so.Again I have to say I`m not blaming.I`m just telling the truth. We Malaysian children were brainwashed at our very young age--*golden advice from the adults* "Study=Exam & Good result = bright future" .So basically some of our young generation EAT BOOKS for growth and survive and then...hmm I don`t want to continue since this is a SENSITIVE ISSUE.

As a conclusion,

Don`t ask,just study.
Your life will be in trouble if you fail your Malaysian Studies.

Oh yeah.
and not to forgot to shout

"Malaysia Boleh!!!" for producing young generation who don`t care about current issues and what happened in our country.

To Ministry of Higher Eduction--you failed to encourage us to understand the political, social and economical developments!

A Remarkable Night

I was looking forward for this night to come since last week because there is a jazz concert on 22/03/2010 (Monday).Well,I`m a music lover and Jazz is one of my favourite genre. Thus,I have the ability to "sense" this sort of event through the poster at the notice board in my university.

I was actually planned to go alone because I thought that I can`t find a jazz lover to go to the concert with me.I even bought my own ticket on last Monday! And my course mate,Erene saw my ticket and started to ask about that concert. And then she told me that she will go with me.Then Shiang Chiet,Jerry,Wong,Ah Hui and Ming Kern also get know about this concert and they join us.Besides there`s also another senior join us but I`m sorry I don`t know his name =) This means there was 8 of us going for that concert ^^ Wow!!This is something which I never think about, that I would end up like got so many friends going to the concert with me!! ok,let me ^^ once again~

Erene and I~while waiting for the taxi

The performing band is "WVC TRiO +1",which means there`s is 3members at the beginning when they formed the band while "+1" means another 1 member join the band later. The pianist is Mr.Tay Cher Siang, Saxophonist Mr.Benjamin Lee Drummer Mr.Adam Osmianki and the bass player is Mr.Vincent Ong.Their music is really nice and I can feel their enthusiasm! You know,it`s very important or I have to say it`s a 'MUST' for the musicians to give their music "life" because listening music is same as reading a book. The only difference is we need to listen the music with our heart then we can only understand what is the story that the composers want to tell us.

Taken during the performance.

The concert lasted for 2 hours and I feel like don`t want to go to an end since their performance is awesome! Some of the music that they played are : "Ju Hua Tai" , "Tong Hua","The Art of a wind up Alarm Clock","Atanding in the Rain of Euclid Ave","Rhumba for a Sad Sad Witch"and other song which I can`t remember the name.My favourite music piece is "Seaside Outside the Window" *if not mistaken* by Mr.Tay Cher Siang.Splendid music! It`s a relaxing music and for me I started to imagine a person having random thoughts as he/she looks at the sea.Well,it`s just my own feeling and my very own opinion for this music. This is the band`s new song which was just finished last month. The saxophonist also impressed me because of his talent! He`s so handsome xD Anyway this doesn`t mean that the drummer and the bass player is not good. For me all of them are great because the performance won`t be perfect without any one of them.I only can say that my emotion is totally controlled by the melody throughout the concert. I swing my body, I paid full attention to the music,clapping.... =)

And yes,I did learn something new today. When I was performed in Italy 3years ago together with my school band,I remembered that the audience were silent when we were playing the music. They would only clap after we finished our song.If they love the music that we played they would just stand up and clap! This made me think that it`s rude to clap when people is playing the music. And I was just keep quiet during the performance is going and clap after they finished their performance. But since Mr.Tay told that in a Jazz concert it`s actually encouraged to clap during the performance as a sign of appreciate the performance,so I should clap anytime as I wish =p

It`s a remarkable and unforgettable night for me since it`s been a long time I didn`t watch a concert.Since we don`t have a car so 8 of us took 2 taxi to the place which is quite far from our university. Thanks to all my beloved course mates who went to the concert with me ^^

Trip to Old Folks Home

I went to old folks home with my course mates yesterday (06/03/10).This was my very first time to visit the old folks home thus I was quite looking forward to the visiting. The visiting to the old folks home is part of our co-curriculum activities. Our group consists of 47 students, leaded by Mr.Nithi.

We departed from the university at 8am.It took us approximately 1hour to reach the old folks home. The old folks home is located at Kepala Batas in Penang.Since we planned to sing for the old folks so we learnt the selected songs on the bus. It`s an memorable moment since everyone seem like singing happily on the bus =) After we reached the place most of us were shocked because it`s so kampung until the bus can`t get into the narrow road to the place. We had to take another 625m (if not mistaken) of walking journey to the old folks home.

The old folks home is so-called "Happy retirement home" but trust me,when you look at the old people there you won`t feel any happiness among them.I felt very sad and hopeless at the first sight I look at them. Most of them were just sitting on the wheel chair, some were sleeping while some of them I just don`t know what and where are there looking. They seem like waiting the time to say bye bye to the world really pity of them.

Oh I forgot to mention the place. It`s really very kampung. The old home is located beside an oil palm estate. Can you imagine that? There is a vegetable farm and lots of flowers and dogs.Perhaps they need the dogs to acts as their security guard.

Doggie~I think they kept the dogs inside the cages when there are visitors coming.

Ok now let`s talk about what we did for the old people. After we met the person-in-charge to get know what we have to do we started our works. Some people went to do some clean-ups,some went to cut the nails for the old folks, some go to the the vegetable farm to do some works.I was the one who help the old folks to pick the vegetables. This was also my fist time to do this stuff. The aunty taught me to pick the vegetables. While we were picking the vegetables the aunty told me about her story. She is 40 something, her younger brother sent her to that old folks home because she quarreled with her mother. She is a Christian. From my observation,I guess she might have some mental problem. She can`t answer my questions when I asked her but she will answer my questions after sometimes. She is suffering from some sickness,so I encourage her to pray and the God will listen.

The vegetables that we picked.

Before lunch we had a session to share about what we learnt and what we feel.I was pointed by a dua pao ong to share about my feelings and I also learnt from other friends` sharing.During lunch time our lecturer,Mr Nithi and one of our course mates were "forced" to sing a song to the old folks xD After lunch it came to our SHOW TIME!!!We sang the songs for the old folks.I was really enjoy the singing session though the old people seem like did not enjoy =s Well, anyway,I don`t care about that. What I care is I really put my effort to do something for them.

There is an old lady who is English educated, managed to communicate with all of us in English. She told us some of her life experience and also her stories.I really feel that old people are actually heritage for the youngsters like us.I can still remember that she told us must always smile, and if you can`t get a right partner, then better to stay as a single. She is quite open minded, and she is willing to answer all the questions that we asked her. There is also an uncle who is good in writing poems and do some art works.Really impressed by his works ^^
Our last activities with them before we left is to celebrate birthday with them.Too bad the granny and the old men seem like don`t eat cake. Most of them told me they were full in Hokkien.Luckily I can understand simple Hokkien Language if not I will keep on trying to feed them.

The trip to old folks made me thinks of many things.I learnt to respect my grandparents, from my heart.Since I can see how miserable is the old people`s life in the old folks home I swear I will never think to send my parents to old folks home in the future. The society need to give more love and helping to the vulnerable one.I hope I will have more opportunities to visit the old folks home in the future. Thanks to AIMST Biotech faculty who gave us the chance to do some social works. We will go to the handicapped home next Sunday. Will write about this coming trip.

Some of my course mates` experience :
1.There is an old man whose nails is very thick until they have to use a mini saw to saw the nails.
2.When one of my course mates talk with an old lady she shared about her experience until she cried!
3.When my course mate help an old lady to cut her nails she kept on touching her hairs, perhaps the old lady wish to express her gratefulness?
4.When my friend saying good bye to an uncle he replied : "blet chiu blet chiu"
(bless you).hahaha!!!

This is the other use of a banner.Taken when we were leaving the old folks home.

I`m sorry I didn`t take much picture since I left my hand phone in my bags when I do my works.Besides,it`s too sad for me to take the pictures of the old people.
